The New Jersey Devils agreed to terms with center Nico Hischier on a five-year extension that will carry an average annual value of $11.7 million, the team announced Wednesday.

Hischier has one year remaining on his contract with a cap hit of $7.25 million after signing a seven-year deal in 2019. The new extension will kick in for the start of the 2027-28 season.

The 27-year-old was the first pick in the 2017 draft. He posted 28 goals and 38 assists in 82 games last season while averaging 20:43 of ice time. The Devils named him captain in 2021.

Hischier's best season came in 2022-23, when he posted 31 goals and 49 assists in 81 contests with a plus-33 rating. He's notched 488 points in 609 games during his nine-year NHL career.

New Jersey went 42-37-3 last year and missed the playoffs for the 11th time in the last 14 seasons.
