Report: Berube's Leafs future unclear after Treliving firing
If the Toronto Maple Leafs are cleaning house, it won't be done overnight.
While the team notified Craig Berube of general manager Brad Treliving's firing Monday, the Leafs head coach wasn't given any indication about his status with the club beyond this season, sources told Darren Dreger of TSN.
Berube, whom Treliving hired in May 2024 to replace Sheldon Keefe, will have two years remaining on his contract following this season. However, the Leafs are on course for their worst campaign since posting 29 wins in 2015-16 - the last time they failed to reach the postseason.
The disappointing season marks a drastic turnaround from Berube's first year behind the bench when Toronto finished with 108 points - second most in the Eastern Conference - and made the second round of the playoffs for just the second time since the 2003-04 campaign.
Berube joined the Leafs after winning 206 of 382 regular-season games over six seasons with the St. Louis Blues. He led the organization to its only Stanley Cup in his first season with St. Louis in 2018-19.
