Fiala undergoes season-ending surgery after injuring leg at Olympics

Los Angeles Kings forward Kevin Fiala underwent season-ending surgery to repair fractures in his left lower leg that he suffered while playing for Switzerland at the Olympics, the team announced Sunday.

The Kings didn't provide an exact timeline for the injury but said he'll be re-evaluated at the end of the NHL campaign.

Fiala was stretchered off late in the third period of Friday's game against Canada after being hit awkwardly by Tom Wilson. There was no penalty on the play.

"We haven't seen him yet. I think he went to the hospital," Switzerland head coach Patrick Fischer said postgame, according to NHL.com's Nick Cotsonika. "Obviously, it doesn't look very good. Tough, tough, tough moment for Kevin and the whole team, obviously."

Fiala ranks second on the Kings with 18 goals and 40 points in 56 games, and he's one of 10 NHL players on Switzerland's roster.

Los Angeles teammate Drew Doughty was on the ice for Canada.

"I, like, wanted to (go) over there when he was lying on the ground," Doughty said, according to Cotsonika. "I just said something to him going off the ice, and I'm going to find him as fast as I can right now."

The Kings acquired star forward Artemi Panarin before the Olympic break. Los Angeles is one point out of the second wild card in the Western Conference.

Fiala sustained a broken femur in 2017 during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
