Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy underwent facial surgery and is out indefinitely, head coach Marco Sturm told reporters Wednesday, according to the Boston Globe's Jim McBride.
McAvoy was struck in the face by a slap shot in Saturday's win against the Montreal Canadiens.

McAvoy has 14 points in 19 games this campaign while averaging over 23 minutes a night for the Bruins. He missed the last 25 contests of last season after sustaining a shoulder injury at the 4 Nations Face-Off, which led to a staph infection that required surgery.
The 27-year-old was one of six players named to the USA's Olympic roster in June.
McAvoy hasn't played a full 82-game slate in his nine-season career. He suited up for a career-high 78 contests in 2021-22, when he earned a personal-best fourth place in Norris Trophy voting.
The Bruins are second in the Atlantic Division with a 12-9-0 record.
