Avalanche deal Coyle, Wood to Blue Jackets
The Colorado Avalanche traded center Charlie Coyle and winger Miles Wood to the Columbus Blue Jackets for prospect Gavin Brindley, a 2027 conditional second-round pick, and a third-round selection (No. 77 overall) in this year's draft, the teams announced Friday.
Coyle, acquired by Colorado prior to this year's trade deadline, has one season left on his contract at a $5.25-million cap hit.
He upgrades the Blue Jackets' depth down the middle, where he'll likely serve as a dependable option behind Sean Monahan and Adam Fantilli.
Coyle tallied 17 goals and 18 assists split between the Avalanche and Boston Bruins this past season. He played seven campaigns in Boston following a seven-year stint with the Minnesota Wild.
The 33-year-old has 485 points in 950 career games.
Wood, 29, managed four goals and eight points in 37 games. He has four years left on his contract, which carries a $2.5-million cap hit.
The Blue Jackets drafted Brindley 34th overall in 2023. The 5-foot-9 winger scored 53 points in 40 games in 2023-24 at the University of Michigan but struggled in his first professional campaign, tallying 17 points in 52 AHL contests.
Columbus was surprisingly in the playoff hunt this year, missing the cutline by two points. The Blue Jackets haven't reached the postseason since 2020.
Colorado is seeking upgrades after losing to the Dallas Stars in the first round of the playoffs.
