Karlsson to be re-evaluated in March after forearm surgery

San Jose Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson is out for the foreseeable future after undergoing successful surgery to repair a muscle tear in his left forearm, the team announced Tuesday.

There's no specific recovery timeline, but the Sharks expect to re-evaluate him in mid-March.

Karlsson, who missed San Jose's most recent game, was enjoying a strong bounce-back season, with 26 points in 33 contests while averaging over 23 minutes.

The 31-year-old had a career-low 0.42 points-per-game rate in last year's shortened campaign.

Since arriving in San Jose via trade in 2018, he's registered 133 points in 194 appearances.

The Sharks currently sit four points back of third spot in the Pacific Division. They're tied with the Calgary Flames for the second wild-card position at 44 points but have played five extra games.
