Red Wings' Gustav Nyquist: Enjoys memorable finish to season, arena

Rotowire9 years ago

Nyquist collected two primary assists against the Devils on Sunday, as the Red Wings celebrated the final win at historic Joe Louis Arena, which has officially closed.

Analysis:

Nyquist was one of the few Red Wings to have improved on last year's point totals, going from 43 to 48. That accomplishment was made possible by a career-high 36 assists, though he did take a big step back in scoring, notching five fewer goals both on the man advantage and in total. The winger position was very crowded in Detroit this year, but Nyquist kicked it up a notch and finished with 11 points (two goals, nine assists) in the final 10 games -- including multi-point outings in half of those contests. The Swede seemed to shift a gear once Thomas Vanek left at the trade deadline, so it'll be interesting to see if GM Ken Holland feels the need to bring the Austrian back.
