New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart is expected to undergo knee surgery that will end his 2026 season, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo.
Dart suffered damage to his MCL, PCL, and meniscus, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The damage to his meniscus is reportedly the biggest issue.
Dart sought multiple opinions after he was hurt in Monday's game against the Los Angeles Rams. Initial reports indicated that the second-year quarterback sprained his MCL, but further imaging revealed the extent of his knee injury.
The Ole Miss product exited during the Giants' first offensive possession. His leg bent awkwardly when Rams defenders Josaiah Stewart and Byron Young hit him during a pass attempt. Dart grabbed at his left knee after the play and was able to walk off the field to the medical tent before subsequently heading to the locker room.
Dart passed for 230 yards and three touchdowns in New York's 28-20 win against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1.
Jameis Winston, who replaced Dart in the 28-6 loss to the Rams, will step in as the Giants' starting quarterback. Winston completed 11 of 27 passes for 111 yards and an interception in relief Monday. He started two games for New York last season, and the team lost both outings.
The Giants could promote Jake Haener from the practice squad to serve as Winston's backup. New York could also make other moves to bolster its depth at quarterback.
The Giants (1-1) face the Tennessee Titans (0-2) on Sunday.
