The San Francisco 49ers quietly rewarded head coach Kyle Shanahan with a contract extension during the offseason, sources told The Ringer's Tom Pelissero.
Shanahan was previously believed to be signed through the 2027 season, per Pelissero. The terms of his new agreement have not been revealed.
San Francisco named Shanahan the 20th coach in franchise history in February 2017.
The 46-year-old avoided tragedy in July when his vehicle collided with an SUV in Palo Alto, California. He sustained a concussion, broken left hand, broken nose, three broken ribs, and 40 stitches above his right eye, according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner.
Shanahan showed no apparent lingering effects from the crash while roaming the sideline during Thursday's 27-7 win over the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia.
Shanahan, the son of former NFL coach Mike Shanahan, has an 83-67 regular-season record as a head coach.
San Francisco rewarded the younger Shanahan and general manager John Lynch with multi-year extensions in Sept. 2023. The duo has guided the 49ers to five NFC Championship Games and two Super Bowl appearances (LIV, LVIII), both of which they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.
