The Indianapolis Colts named Anthony Richardson their primary backup quarterback Thursday.
Richardson beat out Riley Leonard for the role behind starter Daniel Jones.
"I'm just blessed to continue to find a way in this league, continue to find my way on the roster," Richardson said, according to Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan. "I'm just thankful that they believe in me enough to promote me to QB2."
Richardson completed 21 of 33 passes for 249 yards with one interception in the preseason. He added another 68 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Leonard, meanwhile, went 20-for-42 through the air for 199 yards with two interceptions.
"I thought (Richardson) did some good things through camp," head coach Shane Steichen said. "He's continued to develop and grow. ... And same thing with Riley."
He added, "You never know when their number will be called."
Richardson's future with the Colts looked murky after he requested a trade in February. The 24-year-old has struggled since being selected fourth overall in the 2023 draft. He's thrown for 2,400 yards with 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions and rushed for 634 yards and 10 scores across 17 games.
Indianapolis will host the Baltimore Ravens in its Sept. 13 season opener.
