The NFL intends to prohibit players who return to college from signing with its teams this season, sources told Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Players who rejoin the NCAA after being released by an NFL team will reportedly remain free agents and won't be subject to another draft.
The league's decision comes after Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris both attended NFL training camps, cleared waivers, and then reunited with their former Ole Miss coach, Lane Kiffin, at LSU.
The SEC and Big Ten announced a new policy Tuesday preventing their teams from rostering players who previously declared for the NFL draft without withdrawing or who have previously signed a contract with a pro franchise. Wright and Harris both went undrafted before signing NFL deals.
SEC teams that add players with professional experience could face penalties, including a half-season suspension for a coach and a fine equal to half of the program's annual budget, sources told ESPN's Mark Schlabach on Wednesday. Programs could also reportedly be stripped of league voting rights, with commissioner Greg Sankey cleared to levy additional punishment.
