Lions' LaPorta likely out for season after back procedure

Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta is unlikely to return this season after undergoing back surgery, head coach Dan Campbell said Friday, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

"Sam did have a procedure, and he's going to be out for a while," Campbell said, per Pride of Detroit's Jeremy Reisman. "I think we would be fortunate to have a chance to get him back for the rest of the season at some point. I think that (chance) is very, very slim."

The Lions placed LaPorta on injured reserve after he suffered a back injury in the Lions' 44-22 win over the Washington Commanders on Nov. 9.

The third-year tight end has 40 receptions for 489 yards and three touchdowns in nine games this season. The Iowa product is just two years removed from earning a Pro Bowl nod in 2023 after racking up 889 yards and 10 scores as a rookie.

Brock Wright is projected to step up with LaPorta sidelined. Ross Dwelley is another option on Detroit's active roster, while Anthony Firkser and Zach Horton are on the Lions' practice squad.
