Joe Burrow appears to be the next quarterback poised to cash in on a contract extension.
The Cincinnati Bengals signal-caller said Tuesday he and the team have started negotiating his new deal.
"I'm involved," Burrow said. "That's in the works. That's not really something that I like to play out in the media. That's something - just the way I think they want to do business, I want to do business - we prefer to keep that between us."
Cincinnati has reportedly prioritized signing Burrow to a long-term extension this offseason. The team picked up the fifth-year option on his rookie deal in April to keep him under contract through the 2024 campaign.
But Burrow isn't the only young Bengals star who will soon need a new contract. Receiver Tee Higgins can also sign an extension after completing his third NFL season, while star wideout Ja'Marr Chase will be eligible for a new deal next offseason.
Burrow said he's mindful of the team's salary-cap situation amid negotiations.
"Whenever you have guys on the team that need to be paid, that's always on your mind," he said. "You want that to be a focal point. So, we're working to make that happen."
This offseason has already seen two quarterbacks secure historic contracts. Philadelphia Eagles passer Jalen Hurts briefly held the title of highest-paid player in NFL history after signing a new deal with an average annual value of $51 million per year, but Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson quickly supplanted him with an extension averaging $52 million annually.
