Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen have filed for divorce after 13 years of marriage, the quarterback announced on Instagram on Friday.

Brady said the two "arrived at this decision amicably and with gratitude" for the time they spent together.

"We arrived at this decision to end our marriage after much consideration, Brady stated. "Doing so is, of course, painful and difficult, like it is for many people who go through the same thing every day around the world. However, we wish only the best for each other as we pursue whatever new chapters in our lives that are yet to be written."

Bundchen added in a statement that the two had "grown apart," but she feels "blessed" for the time they shared.

The split between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback and the fashion model comes after months of rumors of an impending divorce.

Brady married Bundchen in February 2009. The couple has two children, while Brady also parents a child from a previous relationship.

The seven-time Super Bowl champion sent shockwaves throughout the NFL this offseason after initially retiring in February before going back on his decision less than two months later.

Bundchen previously said she had worries about Brady's return but understands why he came back.

"Obviously, I have my concerns. This is a very violent sport, and I have my children, and I would like him to be more present," Bundchen told Elle's Chantal Fernandez in September. "I have definitely had those conversations with him over and over again. But ultimately, I feel that everybody has to make a decision that works for (them). He needs to follow his joy, too."

Brady told reporters in October there was "no retirement in my future" when pressed about the possibility of retiring midseason.
