Report: 49ers excusing Garoppolo from mandatory minicamp

The San Francisco 49ers are excusing quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo from the team's upcoming mandatory minicamp, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports, citing league sources.

Garoppolo has been rehabbing away from team facilities after undergoing shoulder surgery following the 2021 season. The NFC West club continues to explore trade options for the veteran passer ahead of training camp.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said he expects the Niners will still deal Garoppolo this offseason but explained it's "not a guarantee." The club has expressed that it's unlikely to release Garoppolo.

Garoppolo was expected to be dealt over the course of the offseason but has seen his market dry up after undergoing surgery. The Niners would save $25.5 million in cap space if they were to move on from Garoppolo before their 2022 campaign, per Over the Cap.

If Garoppolo remains with the club, he would count for $26.9 million against the salary cap.

The veteran signal-caller led San Francisco to a 9-6 record last season. He threw for 3,810 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions with a 68.3% completion rate.

Garoppolo isn't expected to be cleared to resume throwing at full strength until near the beginning of training camp.

Second-year passer Trey Lance is expected to assume the starting role for San Francisco next season.
