Report: Kaepernick working out for Raiders

Free-agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick is working out for the Las Vegas Raiders on Wednesday, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Kaepernick's last NFL appearance came as a member of the San Francisco 49ers in 2016, which was the same year he started kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality and racial injustice.

The Raiders' interest marks the quarterback's first workout with a team since his last NFL appearance and his first visit since he met with the Seattle Seahawks in 2017, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Kaepernick participated in a throwing session during a Michigan spring game in April and offered his services to any interested NFL clubs. The 34-year-old also expressed openness to being a backup.

"I can help make you a better team. I can help you win games," Kaepernick said following his April throwing exhibition. "I know right now the situation likely won't allow me to come in (and) step into a starting role. I know I'll be able to work my way to that, though."

Raiders owner Mark Davis expressed his support for the prospect of adding Kaepernick in 2020, telling ESPN's Paul Gutierrez that he'd informed front-office staff members they had his "blessing" to sign the quarterback if they desired.

The Raiders' quarterback room is headed by Derek Carr. Below him on the depth chart are Jarrett Stidham, who was recently acquired via trade, and Nick Mullens.

A second-round pick in 2011, Kaepernick took the league by storm in his second season and guided the 49ers to the Super Bowl, where they lost to the Baltimore Ravens. He threw for 72 touchdowns to 30 interceptions in San Francisco while adding 2,300 yards and 13 scores with his legs.
