Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid lamented the final play he called before halftime of the AFC Championship Game that ran out the clock and seemingly shifted momentum to the Cincinnati Bengals.

"I probably gave (quarterback Patrick Mahomes) the wrong play, first of all," Reid said after the Chiefs fell 27-24 in overtime. "I could've given him something better than that where the play was open in the end zone and then we wouldn't have had to go through that. I'll take responsibility for that one."

The Chiefs led 21-10 with five seconds left in the second quarter when Mahomes threw to Tyreek Hill in the flat. Cincinnati tackled Hill shy of the end zone with no time left to run another play.

The Bengals hadn't gotten a defensive stop up to that point. Cincinnati outscored Kansas City 14-3 in the second half and kicked a game-winning field goal in overtime to reach the Super Bowl for the first time in 33 years.

"I was supposed to throw the ball away," Mahomes said postgame, according to KQ2's Chris Roush. "I got a little greedy there."

Reid stood by his decision not to bring on the field-goal unit with five seconds left, saying the Chiefs "had enough time to run another play," according to Nate Taylor of The Athletic.
