Seahawks' Carson to undergo season-ending neck surgery
Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll announced Friday that running back Chris Carson will undergo season-ending neck surgery, according to ESPN's Brady Henderson.
Carson is opting to have the surgery now so that he can return to the field next season, Carroll said.
The 27-year-old rushed for three touchdowns and 232 yards with a 4.3 yards-per-carry average in four contests this year.
Carson remains on Seattle's injured reserve after missing four games in the hope of playing later in the campaign. He recently returned to practice but will now turn his focus toward a comeback in 2022.
Seattle will officially hand over the keys to their rushing attack to a stable of tailbacks. Alex Collins leads the team with 345 rushing yards and has managed two touchdowns and 4.1 yards per carry.
Carroll is anticipating a bigger role for Rashaad Penny moving forward.
"We're anxious to see him get going," Carroll said, according to Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic. "It's really his time to help us. As we go through the next couple weeks, you'll see him continue to be a big part of it."
Travis Homer and DeeJay Dallas round out the depth chart.
The Seahawks take on the Arizona Cardinals in an NFC West clash Sunday.
