Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is unlikely to play in Week 3 of the preseason, which would close the door on him seeing any exhibition action.
"There's a good chance he won't play," head coach Mike McCarthy said Wednesday about the upcoming matchup with the Houston Texans, according to ESPN's Todd Archer.
McCarthy previously said he wouldn't play Prescott, who's nursing a shoulder strain, in the preseason finale if he isn't fit for the third game.
Prescott continued his modified throwing program at practice Wednesday, and the Cowboys still believe he'll be ready for the start of the regular season. Dallas will open the 2021 campaign Sept. 9 against the defending champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The 28-year-old hasn't played since suffering a dislocated right ankle and compound fracture on Oct. 11, 2020. Prescott's also been nursing a sore shoulder since the beginning of training camp.
The Cowboys signed Prescott to a four-year, $160-million contract in the offseason, making him one of the NFL's highest-paid field generals.
