Report: Wentz will seek departure from Eagles if Hurts remains starter

Carson Wentz has no desire to be a backup quarterback and would seek a trade from the Philadelphia Eagles if Jalen Hurts continues to start, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The 27-year-old isn't happy with the way the quarterback saga has unfolded in Philadelphia, Schefter adds.

The team benched Wentz following Week 13 due to his inconsistent play this season. While the Eagles reportedly intend to hang on to the former starter, the demotion has attracted attention from other clubs and some are expected to ask about Wentz's trade availability, Schefter notes.

Head coach Doug Pederson hasn't stated Hurts will remain the starter for the remainder of the year, but no change is expected, according to ESPN's Chris Mortenson.

Wentz's contract also complicates his interest in seeking a new club - the signal-caller signed a four-year, $128-million extension in June 2019 and has an abundance of guaranteed money coming his way.

If Philadelphia moves Wentz, a trade would likely have to happen no later than early March. The Eagles will owe the former No. 2 overall pick a $10-million roster bonus if he's on the team by the third day of the 2021 league year - which is also when his base salary for 2022 becomes fully guaranteed.

Despite not starting in Week 14, Wentz's struggles have been on grand display this season. The passer still leads the NFL in interceptions (15) and sacks taken (50).

Hurts is aiming to win his second career start Sunday after leading the Eagles to an upset victory over the New Orleans Saints in Week 14.
