Report: Eagles plan to keep struggling Wentz

The Philadelphia Eagles demoted Carson Wentz for Week 14 but intend to keep the quarterback for the foreseeable future, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Philadelphia still believes Wentz can revert back to being the quality signal-caller he's shown himself to be in years past, Schefter adds.

Wentz's contract heavily complicates matters. He signed a four-year, $128-million extension in June 2019 and has an abundance of guaranteed money coming his way.

The 27-year-old carries a $34.6-million cap hit next season and a dead cap charge of $59.2 million if cut. Wentz will be owed a $10-million roster bonus if he's on the team by the third day of the 2021 league year, which would fall sometime in March. His base salary for 2022 also becomes fully guaranteed on that day, Schefter adds.

Trading Wentz wouldn't be easy, and the Eagles would still be on the books for a significant portion of his salary even if they manage to move him before the third day of the 2021 league year.

Wentz leads the league in interceptions (15) and sacks suffered (50). His struggles have forced Philadelphia to turn to Jalen Hurts. A quality performance from Hurts in Week 14, and possibly down the stretch, would likely make the Eagles' QB decision even tougher.

Hurts brought signs of life to an otherwise lifeless Eagles offense in Week 13, throwing for 109 yards and a touchdown. The Oklahoma product is set to take on the New Orleans Saints and their second-ranked defense in Week 14.
