The Detroit Lions have discussed shutting down quarterback Matthew Stafford for the remainder of the campaign, but the veteran still hopes to play this season, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

In fact, Stafford's been "maniacal" about getting back on the field before the year's done, a source told Schefter.

The 31-year-old has missed Detroit's last two games with fractures in his back. Though the Lions enter Week 12 at 3-6-1, Stafford has not yet been shut down for the season.

Doctors previously told the signal-caller that most players with his injury would be sidelined for six weeks.
