The NFL had officials return to Mexico City this past week to engage in discussions about holding future games south of the U.S. border, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

This Monday's highly anticipated matchup between the high-flying Los Angeles Rams and Kansas City Chiefs was originally scheduled to be held at Estadio Azteca but was relocated due to poor field conditions.

Though the league chose to move the game from Mexico City with less than a week's notice, it's intent on returning to the neighboring country for future games.

The NFL is currently scheduled to continue playing one game per season in Mexico through 2021.
