The Miami Dolphins agreed to trade offensive tackle Ja'Wuan James to the Denver Broncos for running back C.J. Anderson before surprisingly backing out of the deal, sources told Troy Renck of Denver 7.

It's unclear when, exactly, the trade was set to happen, but the Broncos have been rumored to be listening to offers for Anderson throughout the offseason. Broncos general manager John Elway was mum on the 27-year-old's future in Denver when asked about it in late March, saying "he may or may not" be back.

Anderson is at the halfway point of the four-year, $18-million contract he signed as a restricted free agent ahead of the 2016 campaign. He actually inked an offer sheet with the Dolphins at the time, but it was matched by the Broncos. He registered the first 1,000-yard campaign of his career last year, but found the end zone just three times.

The Dolphins signed veteran running back Frank Gore earlier in the offseason, and he's expected to compliment Kenyan Drake in the backfield, but neither are viewed as long-term workhorses.

James, meanwhile, is a former first-round pick of Miami. He has one year left on his rookie deal where he'll earn over $9 million.
