Mike Shanahan takes name out of running for coaching jobs, promotes son
Mike Shanahan's name comes up whenever there's a head coaching vacancy. As the owner of two Super Bowl rings and 170 career wins, his resume speaks for itself.
But as his name is bandied about as a candidate to be the next head coach of the Los Angeles Rams or the Jacksonville Jaguars, Shanahan has another name in mind.
"I think it would be a lot smarter to take Kyle than it would me," Shanahan said, speaking of his son and the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons, Kyle Shanahan, on "The Herd with Colin Cowherd" on Wednesday.
As the architect of the league's second-best offense and third-ranked passing attack, Kyle figures to be a hot coaching candidate this offseason.
His father has 20 years of head coaching experience, but he has been off the sidelines for the past three years and isn't interested in a return to coaching.
"I think I would give an organization maybe a lot more input from top to bottom, the little things that are the difference, and the structure of the organization," Mike Shanahan said.
"I’m not looking for a head coaching job, to be honest with you. I think maybe I could help an organization in some way of what it takes to win Super Bowls. I think really, this game is for younger guys. Guys that are really fired up to run a team, put a good team together. But that head coach has to have a good supporting cast to win a Super Bowl."
The elder Shanahan just may be positioning himself for a front office gig with whichever team gives his son his first shot at being an NFL head coach.
