New York Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson has overstayed his welcome.

"He's gone," a team source said following Wilkerson's first-quarter benching in New York's Week 13 game against the Kansas City Chiefs, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

Though he signed a five-year, $86-million contract prior to the start of the 2016 season, the Jets could choose to sever ties early with their 30th-overall selection from the 2011 draft, creating an additional $9 million in dead cap, but saving them $11 million in cap space for 2018 in the process.

They have a slightly easier out in his contract following the 2018 campaign, when cutting the struggling Wilkerson would create just $6 million in dead cap.

Wilkerson, a seven-year veteran, has played in all 12 games this season, recording 40 combined tackles, 2.5 sacks, and one interception.

Wilkerson refused to answer any questions on Wednesday that weren't centered around the Denver Broncos, the Jets' Week 14 opponent.

“If you ain’t got no Denver questions,” Wilkerson said, “You don’t need to ask me anything.”
