One night after clinching the NL Central on the home field of their most bitter rival, the Chicago Cubs turned out the lights at Busch Stadium in the most dramatic of fashions.
With two out in the 11th inning and their season on the brink, St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Paul DeJong rocketed a fly ball to straightaway center field off Cubs reliever Jen-Ho Tseng that looked to be heading for the seats.
Then appeared Leonys Martin - a September call-up who was part of Joe Maddon's "hangover lineup" Thursday - robbing DeJong of a game-tying homer with a tremendous leaping catch at the wall that eliminated the Cardinals from postseason contention and gave the Cubs a 2-1 victory.
Baseball is just a cruel, cruel game. Better luck next year, Cardinals.
