Trout joins elite company with 1,000th hit before age-26 season
With every hit, Mike Trout joins a few more of baseball's all-time greats in the pantheon of the sport's history.
His 1,000th - a double off Baltimore's Dylan Bundy in the fourth inning on Monday night, Trout's 26th birthday - was no different.
Trout's 1,000th base hit gained him entry into a very unique club as one of only four players to record at least 1,000 hits, score 500 runs, and draw 500 walks before beginning their age-26 season (this is considered Trout's age-25 season, as he turned 26 after July 1). The other three players who accomplished this feat are all in the Hall of Fame.
Player | Team | Years (Before age-26) | H | R | BB |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Jimmie Foxx | Athletics | 1925-33 | 1127 | 737 | 556 |
Mel Ott | Giants | 1926-34 | 1249 | 799 | 622 |
Mickey Mantle | Yankees | 1951-57 | 1080 | 763 | 670 |
Mike Trout | Angels | 2011-17 | 1000 | 651 | 529 |
Joining that impressive list is only the start. Trout entered Monday's game having accumulated 53.1 career Wins Above Replacement, the second-highest total through age 25 in major-league history. By WAR, only Ty Cobb (55.8) produced more than Trout has before turning 26 years of age, according to ESPN Stats & Info.
Trout is the youngest player to have reached 1,000 hits since Miguel Cabrera did it as a 25-year-old in 2008.
