Manchester City is closing in on a deal for Napoli goalkeeper Pepe Reina with the club already seeing a £2.6-million bid rejected as the Italian outfit holds out for a £4.4-million fee, according to James Ducker of The Telegraph.

Ducker reports that the two parties are negotiating a fee, but the expectation is that there will be an agreement reached in the coming days.

He adds that City has also considered activating a buy-back clause on Real Sociedad goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, but the Argentina fringe international does not want reduced playing time ahead of the 2018 World Cup.

Reina, 34, would be the second goalkeeper signed by City this summer as Pep Guardiola also added Ederson out of Benfica for £34.7 million. Reina's signing might pave way for the club to sell Claudio Bravo, as the Chile international fell out of favour in his first year in Manchester.

It would also certainly spell the end of Joe Hart's tenure at the Etihad Stadium, with West Ham nearing the completion of a season-long loan move for the England international.

Having made 394 appearances for Liverpool over nine years, Reina is already familiar with the trials of the Premier League.
