Clemson's Swinney not panicking: 'We're a good football team'
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney isn't looking to press the panic button despite the Tigers' 1-2 record.
"Nobody wants to hear you're close, but we're a good football team," Swinney said Monday, according to Jon Blau of The Post and Courier.
Clemson fell to Georgia Tech 24-21 on Saturday as the Yellow Jackets kicked a game-winning field goal with no time remaining. This season marks the first time the Tigers have lost two of their first three games since 2014. They rebounded after that year's slow start by winning six straight games and finished with a 10-3 record.
"I know there's a lot of panic, and there's a lot of whatever, but I don't panic because I have perspective because I've been here many times, and I've lived it," Swinney added, according to Derrian Carter of The Greenville News.
Both of Clemson's losses this season have been by one possession, which is unusual given Swinney's track record.
"The biggest thing to me is trying to make one more play," Swinney said, according to Chapel Fowler of The State Newspaper. "We lead the nation in one-score wins since 2011, but we're not getting that done. This year, we're 0-for-2."
The Tigers' biggest issues have come on offense, with the unit averaging only 19.3 points per game. Quarterback Cade Klubnik has also struggled, completing just 59.1% of his passes with three touchdowns and three interceptions. However, Swinney has no intentions of benching him.
"Cade's our guy," the head coach remarked. "He knows what he needs to do"
Clemson's worst season under Swinney came in 2010, when the program went 6-7.
