Ohio State head coach Ryan Day announced Saturday that C.J. Stroud will be the starting quarterback for the team's opener against Minnesota, according to Bruce Feldman of FOX Sports.

The redshirt freshman beat out Jack Miller and Kyle McCord to win the quarterback competition. Day tabbed Stroud as the front-runner earlier this week before officially naming him the starter.

"I'm excited about what we've seen (from Stroud)," Day said Saturday, according to Dan Hope of 11 Warriors.

The Buckeyes head coach has also been impressed with the quarterback's leadership ability.

"He's not afraid to speak up, and that's good," Day added.

Stroud hasn't attempted a pass in the NCAA, though he did score a 48-yard touchdown on his lone rushing attempt last season. He will succeed Justin Fields, who departed for the NFL after leading Ohio State to the national championship game last season.

The Buckeyes recruited Stroud, a four-star prospect, as part of its 2020 class. He was ranked second among all quarterback prospects in the nation by ESPN that year.

Ohio State opens its season on Sep. 2 against Minnesota.
