Ohio State's Denzel Ward laid what appeared to be a textbook hit on Maryland's Taivon Jacobs during Saturday's game between the two schools, separating the ball from the runner in dramatic fashion.
Not only did he force the fumble, but he recovered the ball and ran for what was going to be a return touchdown.

Unfortunately for the Buckeyes, the referees ruled that Ward committed a targeting violation on the play, which resulted in a 15-yard penalty and an ejection for the defender.

Ward didn't use the crown of his helmet to initiate contact and didn't strike his opponent's head or neck area, making the call puzzling at best.
The resulting ejection also cost Ohio State arguably its best defensive back for the remainder of the game.
