Jake Venables couldn't pass up playing college football for his father.
The linebacker committed to Clemson for the 2018 recruiting class on Sunday, where his father Brent Venables serves as the defensive coordinator.
"Number one, it's home," Venables told Ryan Bartow of 247Sports. "It's a plus that my family lives here. It's a special place to play and it will be special to play for my dad."
Making the day even more special is the fact that it's Brent's birthday Sunday.
"It's the perfect day," Jake said. "He's been there for me the most throughout this process. He's been there for me since I've been a little kid and told me the things I needed to do to get to this level."
Jake also had offers from Texas Tech, SMU, and Northwestern.
The question is how long will Brent be with the program? Venables is widely regarded as one of the best coordinators in the country and took home the Broyles Award earlier this month as the nation's top assistant. Many feel it's only a matter of time before he lands a head coaching job after guiding Clemson to a top-10 ranked defense in each of the past three campaigns.
Perhaps with his son now joining the fold, it will make Venables want to stick around with the Tigers for a little longer.
