4-star commit's father rips Baylor amid player exodus

After receiving no response to his son's request for a release earlier in the week, Julian Urquidez took matters into his own hands Wednesday.

Urquidez's son, J.P., an offensive tackle, committed to Baylor as a member of the 2016 recruiting class and was scheduled to enroll at the school Monday. Along with five other players, the incoming freshman failed to do so, asking for his release from the program. The family grew increasingly frustrated with the lack of communication from the school, and Julian took to social media to vent.

Sources told ESPN's Jeremy Crabtree that along with Urquidez, fellow recruits Patrick Hudson, Jared Atkinson, Kameron Martin, Parrish Cobb, and Donovan Duvernay also requested releases from their national letters of intent.

There are a couple of ways in which a recruit can get out of a national letter of intent without the school's release. Once a recruit signs their NLI, he is bound to that school unless he fails to meet admissions or eligibility requirements, refrains from attending any educational institution for a year, or the school is facing charges of NCAA recruiting violations.

Baylor now has 30 days to make a decision on the player's status.

The 2016 recruiting class was the best in school history, but now appears to be crumbling following coach Art Briles' dismissal. Four of the Bears' 12 four-star signees have asked for the release, with top recruit Devin Duvernay expected to follow suit.

It isn't just the 2016 class that's falling apart at the school, as four-star quarterback Kellen Mond decommitted from the 2017 class Wednesday. His decision leaves the Bears with just one player still committed to the program in that class.
