Georgetown is hiring Providence head coach Ed Cooley to fill its coaching vacancy, the school announced Monday.

The Hoyas parted ways with program icon Patrick Ewing earlier this month after he posted a 75-109 record over six seasons.

"We are deeply honored that coach Cooley will be joining our community as the next leader of our men's basketball program," said Georgetown president John J. DeGioia. "Ed is a proven leader and an experienced coach whose values and knowledge of the game will lead our program into this new chapter."

Cooley has been at the helm of the Friars since 2012, leading the program to seven NCAA Tournaments and seven seasons of at least 20 wins. Providence had only been to two Big Dances in the 14 years before Cooley's arrival.

In his 17 years as a head coach, split between the Friars and Fairfield, Cooley has only finished below .500 three times.

"I deeply appreciate coach Cooley's immense contributions to the men's basketball program and to the PC community over the past 12 years," said Providence president Rev. Kenneth R. Sicard. "Friar fans everywhere will be forever grateful for this period of sustained excellence in our program, and I personally will continue to have the highest regard for Ed."

Staying in the Big East, Cooley will look to revive a once-proud Hoyas program that's struggled in recent seasons. After playing in March Madness eight times between 2006 and 2015, Georgetown's only appearance since came after a Big East tournament victory in the COVID-shortened 2021 campaign.
