SMU head coach Tim Jankovich retires
SMU men's basketball head coach Tim Jankovich is retiring, he announced Tuesday.
"It has been an honor and a privilege to have coached at SMU for the past 10 years," Jankovich said.
"I find myself at a stage in life where I no longer can in good conscience make the necessary sacrifices that this position demands," he added. "I feel a strong pull to spend more time with the people whom I have unfortunately neglected the most over the years - my dad, my family, and my friends. This is why I have decided to step down and retire from my position as head basketball coach."
Jankovich posted a 125-64 record in 10 seasons with the Mustangs, including six full campaigns as head coach from 2016-22. He helped SMU qualify for the NCAA Tournament in 2017 after winning the AAC conference tournament. Jankovich replaced Larry Brown during the 2015-16 campaign and went 9-0 after taking over.
Before his stint at SMU, the 62-year-old coached at North Texas and Illinois State. Jankovich's head coaching career spanned 29 years, dating back to 1993.
SMU finished last season second in the AAC with a 24-9 record, including a 13-4 mark in conference play.
