UConn returning to Big East
UConn is coming home.
The school's board of trustees unanimously approved the Huskies' move back to the Big East conference Wednesday. UConn has been a member of the American Athletic Conference since its formation in 2013 when the old Big East split.
"We all appreciate the AAC, but the board feels this is in the best interest of the programs," interim chairman Tom Ritter said, according to David Borges of the New Haven Register.
A press conference for an official announcement is scheduled for Thursday at Madison Square Garden. The Huskies aren't expected to play in the Big East until the 2020-21 season.
UConn was a founding member of the Big East in 1979 and arguably boasts the conference's most successful basketball programs. The men's program won three national championships and the women's team claimed eight during the school's tenure in the Big East.
Despite a six-year hiatus, the Huskies' men's squad stills owns the most Big East regular-season titles and is tied with Georgetown for most conference tournament championships.
