<p>Detroit Pistons guard <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/102756" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/102756">Jaden Ivey</a> will miss at least four weeks after undergoing an arthroscopic procedure to relieve right knee discomfort, the team announced Thursday.</p><p>The surgery is unrelated to the broken fibula he suffered in January against the Orlando Magic.</p><p>Ivey was having his best season prior to being sidelined, averaging career highs in points (17.6), rebounds (4.1), and 3-point percentage (40.9%).</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The Purdue product made his first appearance since the fibula injury Oct. 6 versus the Memphis Grizzlies, tallying seven points, one rebound, and one assists in 14 minutes of action. He then sat out the Pistons' next two preseason games.</p><p>Ivey's entering the final year of his rookie deal. The 23-year-old is set to become a restricted free agent next summer if Detroit doesn't sign him to a rookie-scale contract extension.</p><p>The Pistons selected Ivey with the fifth overall pick in 2022.</p>

<p>Los Angeles Lakers superstar <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/72" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/72">LeBron James</a> is targeting a mid-November return after experiencing sciatica on his right side, <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1978650970843124004">ESPN's Shams Charania</a> reports.</p><p>James is taking a patient approach with his rehab and will require at least a few weeks to ramp up his conditioning, adds Charania.</p><p>The Lakers <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3364535" href="https://thescore.com/news/3364535">initially</a> ruled out James for at least three-to-four weeks last Thursday.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>James sustained the injury during an on-court workout in late July, according to Charania.</p><p>The four-time Finals MVP hasn't participated in any team practices or preseason games.</p><p>James continued to perform at a high level in his age-40 season, averaging 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, 7.8 rebounds, and one steal across 70 contests last year.</p><p>While he's been durable throughout most of his career, the 21-time All-Star has made 70 appearances or more in only two of his last seven campaigns.</p>

He has yet to suit up for the club after initially injuring his hamstring during training camp.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"We all know the soft tissue injuries are really hard to see exactly the progress," Ott said. "Obviously it's frustrating, but this is all part of it. Thankfully we caught it early. It's not that serious, but he wants to be out there.</p><p>"New teammates, new system. There's just other ways. We're going to have to speed him up. That's the reality of it. He did a great job in the China trip hanging in there with us."</p><p>The Suns acquired Green from the Houston Rockets this offseason as part of the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/345" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/345">Kevin Durant</a> blockbuster deal. He guided the franchise to their first Finals appearance in 13 years during the 2023-24 campaign.</p><p>"J-Kidd's basketball resume is one of the best in the game, and through every situation he has proven he's the right person to lead the Mavericks," said general manager Nico Harrison, according to <a href="https://apnews.com/article/dallas-mavericks-jason-kidd-contract-05169a1031938d12113463b3be4e14cb">The Associated Press</a>. His decision gives him a full no-trade clause and allows him to hit unrestricted free agency next summer.</p><p>Offense has never been a question when it comes to Thomas. The LSU product can create his own shot and heat up in a hurry. His playmaking has also improved significantly since entering the league four years ago. Thomas posted a 22% assist percentage in 2024-25, which ranked in the 95th percentile among wings, per <a href="https://cleaningtheglass.com/stats/player/4932#tab-offensive_overview">Cleaning the Glass</a>. However, he hasn't been able to stay healthy for an entire campaign and struggles defensively. Still, he knocked down the 17th-most triples (215) in the Association and should be a seamless fit in Joe Mazzulla's 3-point-heavy offense. Simons' shot-creation will be helpful, too, but he's been a major defensive liability throughout his first seven campaigns. She was a weapon in the pick-and-roll and kept defenders off balance with her ability to seamlessly change speeds on drives to the rim. When Young was in an off-ball role, she made timely cuts to the basket. The four-time All-Star was never hesitant to pull up from the mid-range or beyond the arc when opposing defenses gave her the slightest space.</p><p>Young and Wilson each topped 30 points in the Aces' Game 5 overtime victory against the Fever, becoming the first pair of teammates to accomplish the feat in the same playoff game. Young had an equally impressive showing less than a week later, dropping 32 points - including a Finals-record 21 in the third quarter - to help Las Vegas take a 2-0 series lead.</p><p>Young took on more playmaking responsibilities when Plum was traded to the Los Angeles Sparks during the offseason. She formed an effective two-man game with Wilson, often hitting the Aces superstar in stride on pocket passes. Young always had her head on a swivel when handling the rock. Loyd had been a starter for virtually her entire career, but she wanted to put the team first. Her selfless approach was rewarded with a breakthrough Finals performance.</p><p>Loyd showed flashes of her old self against Phoenix, averaging 13.8 points and draining 44.8% of her 3-point attempts. Her eight points in the opening quarter of Game 1 turned the tide after the Mercury jumped out to an early 10-2 lead. She also made an immediate impact in the first quarter of Game 3, knocking down four straight triples to ignite a 17-0 scoring run. Loyd didn't take home Finals MVP honors, but she forced Phoenix to respect her shot, allowing Wilson more chances to feast against one-on-one coverage.</p>

<p>Duke head coach Jon Scheyer signed a two-year contract extension that runs through the 2030-31 season, vice president and director of athletics Nina King announced Thursday.</p><p>The 38-year-old Scheyer took over after the legendary Mike Krzyzewski retired in 2022. He had spent the previous eight seasons as an associate head coach and assistant under Krzyzewski.</p><p>Duke's reached the NCAA Tournament in each of Scheyer's three seasons in charge, including a Final Four run in 2025.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"Jon's remarkable impact over his first three seasons has positioned Duke basketball for sustained excellence, and we are proud to ensure his leadership well into the future," King said in a statement.</p><p>"He has delivered championships and national prominence, and he continues to lead a program built on character, connection, and a relentless pursuit of greatness."</p><p>Scheyer's 89 victories are tied with Brad Stevens and Brad Underwood for the most by a head coach through their first three seasons at the Division I level, according to ESPN Research.</p><p>Scheyer is excelling on the recruiting trail as well. Bonner provided an offensive spark when she joined the Mercury's top-scoring second unit in July, and her proven track record in the postseason should benefit the trio of rookies in their rotation.</p><p><strong>Reason for concern: Slow starts</strong></p><p>Phoenix needed to dig itself out of some early holes in the previous round. The Lynx outscored the Mercury in the first quarter in three of the four matchups, including Game 2, when Phoenix trailed by 16 points at halftime and was down by as many as 20 before mounting a comeback to avoid a 0-2 series deficit. In Game 4, the Mercury fell behind 25-14 through the opening 10 minutes and didn't make a field goal until the midway point of the quarter. Wilson's defense has been equally impressive as she's recorded 5.4 stocks per contest.</p><p>The Aces went 3-0 against the Mercury this season with Wilson in the lineup as the All-Star center put up a dominating 25 points and 15.7 boards per game.</p><p><strong>Biggest strength: Championship experience</strong></p><p>Las Vegas is no stranger to the bright lights. It returns five players from its previous two championship squads, including Wilson, Chelsea Gray, and Jackie Young.</p><p>Wilson and Gray both have Finals MVP awards in their trophy cabinet. Meanwhile, Young is playing the best basketball of her career and was a key contributor in the Aces' most recent championship appearance, posting back-to-back games of at least 20 points, five rebounds, and four assists in their 2023 triumph over the Liberty. The playoffs have been a mixed bag for the six-time All-Star. Las Vegas could use Loyd's shot-making prowess to clear more space for Wilson to operate down low.</p><p><strong>Reason for concern: Big Three's minutes</strong></p><p>How much does the Aces' Big Three of Wilson, Young, and Gray have left in the tank? The trio is leading the WNBA in minutes played during the postseason and has collectively been on the court for 113 more minutes than the Mercury's troika of Thomas, Kahleah Copper, and Satou Sabally. That might loom large entering the first best-of-seven series in WNBA Finals history, especially after the league's longest regular season ever.</p>

The former first-round pick wasn't in attendance for the club's media day and didn't travel to Abu Dhabi for their preseason games against the New York Knicks.</p><p>Grimes' side initially sought a contract in the $30 million range, according to Charania. His agent said the 76ers' first formal proposal was a four-year, $39-million contract offer that came on Sept. 24.</p><p>Grimes' representatives countered with a one-year contract worth $17 million while waiving the no-trade clause or a two-year deal at $34 million with a player option, adds Charania. The 76ers rejected both proposals, leading to Grimes signing the qualifying offer.</p><p>Philadelphia acquired Grimes from the Dallas Mavericks last February in exchange for Caleb Martin and a 2025 second-round pick. <p>Minnesota Lynx star <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wnba/players/48780" href="https://thescore.com/wnba/players/48780">Napheesa Collier</a> didn't hold back in her criticism of WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert during her exit interview Tuesday.</p><p>The MVP runner-up began her media availability by reading a four-minute statement criticizing multiple aspects of the league and its leadership, including inconsistent officiating.</p><p>Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve was suspended for Game 4 of the WNBA semifinals and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3357888" href="https://thescore.com/news/3357888">reportedly</a> received a league-record $15,000 fine for her conduct and postgame comments regarding the officiating in Game 3.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Stephanie White of the Indiana Fever and Becky Hammon of the Las Vegas Aces were also docked $1,000 each for voicing their support of Reeve.</p><p>"Our leadership's answer to being held accountable is to suppress everyone's voices by handing out fines," said Collier, per <a href="https://x.com/malika_andrews/status/1973084525111472570">ESPN's Malika Andrews</a>. "Year after year, the only thing that remains consistent is a lack of accountability from our leaders."</p><p>Collier added, "Fans see it every night. Coaches - both winning and losing - point it out every night in pregame and postgame media, yet leadership just issues fines and looks the other way. They ignore the issues that everyone inside the game is begging to be fixed. That is negligence."</p><p>Collier, who serves as vice president of the WNBA players' union, revealed that she met with Engelbert at Unrivaled in February to discuss how the commissioner planned to address the league's officiating issues.</p><p>The five-time All-Star says Engelbert told her that "'only the losers complain about the refs.'"</p><p>Collier said she also asked Engelbert about increasing the value of rookie-scale contracts with the current CBA set to expire in October and the likes of <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wnba/players/121626" href="https://thescore.com/wnba/players/121626">Caitlin Clark</a>, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wnba/players/121629" href="https://thescore.com/wnba/players/121629">Angel Reese</a>, and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wnba/players/171763" href="https://thescore.com/wnba/players/171763">Paige Bueckers</a> driving so much revenue for the WNBA.</p><p>"'Caitlin should be grateful she makes $16 million off the court because without the platform that the WNBA gives her, she wouldn't make anything,'" Collier said of Engelbert's response. "And in that same conversation, she told me, 'Players should be on their knees, thanking their lucky stars for the media rights deal that I got them.'</p><p>"That's the mentality driving our league from the top. We go to battle every day to protect a shield that doesn't value us. The league believes it succeeds despite its players, not because of them."</p><p>Clark had no response to Collier's recollection of Engelbert's comments, the Fever told <a href="https://x.com/alexaphilippou/status/1973093461986296182">ESPN's Alexa Philippou</a>.</p><p>Engelbert responded to Collier in a statement released later Tuesday.</p><p>"I have the utmost respect for Napheesa Collier and for all the players in the WNBA. Together, we have all worked tirelessly to transform this league," Engelbert said. "My focus remains on ensuring a bright future for the players and the WNBA, including collaborating on how we continue to elevate the game.</p><p>"I am disheartened by how Napheesa characterized our conversations and league leadership, but even when our perspectives differ, my commitment to the players and to this work will not waver."</p>

He's noted for his three-level scoring and above-average on-ball defense.</p>

The Grizzlies confirmed <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/45655" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/45655">Brandon Clarke</a> and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/121683" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/121683">Zach Edey</a> are set to miss time as well.</p><p>Jackson underwent surgery in early July after sustaining the toe injury "while participating in a live basketball run offsite." He was originally ruled out for a minimum of 12 weeks.</p><p>Memphis re-signed Jackson to a five-year, $240-million extension earlier this summer. The former first-round pick missed the final month of last season due to a high-grade PCL sprain but has fully recovered from that injury.</p><p>Second-year center Edey is expected to return to play in six-to-nine weeks. The Canadian underwent ankle surgery in June and has now been cleared to begin ramping up basketball activities.</p><p>Meanwhile, rookie guard <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/171823" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/171823">Cedric Coward</a> is slated to be a full participant in training camp following shoulder surgery last November. The No. 11 overall pick in this year's draft missed Summer League while he recovered from the procedure.</p><p>Memphis begins the 2025-26 season at home Oct. 22 against the New Orleans Pelicans.</p>
