Report: AD won't return from injury until Mavs owner gives green light

Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis will not return from a calf injury until principal team owner Patrick Dumont gives him the green light to do so, sources told ESPN's Tim MacMahon.

Davis has missed six consecutive games due to the ailment. He's expected to sit out once again when the Mavericks welcome the Phoenix Suns to the American Airlines Center on Wednesday, according to MacMahon.

Dumont has requested medical data on Davis' left calf strain to determine if the 10-time All-Star is at risk of aggravating the injury. Concerns are that Davis could potentially suffer a more serious injury if he returns before the existing strain is fully healed.

The Mavs had initially targeted Saturday's road contest against the Washington Wizards for Davis' return. That plan was abandoned following a disagreement between team director of health and performance Johann Bilsborough and Davis' personal medical staff, MacMahon adds.

Davis sustained his calf strain in the first quarter of a 107-105 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Oct. 29. In five games prior to sustaining the injury, the 32-year-old averaged 20.8 points and 10.2 rebounds in 29.8 minutes.

Dumont's insistence that he be involved in the decision surrounding Davis' return stems from a rift between the owner and former Mavs general manager Nico Harrison, MacMahon adds. Harrison was fired Tuesday following a 3-8 start to the campaign.

Harrison was maligned for his role in Luka Doncic's trade to the Los Angeles Lakers in February. Davis, acquired from the Lakers in the stunning deal, appeared in only nine of a possible 33 regular-season games for the Mavs last season due to an adductor strain.
