Durant plans to sign extension with Rockets
Superstar forward Kevin Durant said Monday that he eventually plans to sign an extension with the Houston Rockets.
Durant is entering the final year of his contract following a blockbuster trade from the Phoenix Suns in the offseason.
"I do see myself signing a contract extension," Durant told reporters, including Yahoo Sports' Kelly Iko. "I can't tell you exactly when it will happen, but I do see it happening."
Durant shared his intention to remain with the Rockets on his 37th birthday. The former MVP will earn $54.7 million in the final year of the deal he signed with the Suns. He's eligible for a two-year, $122-million maximum contract with Houston.
Rockets general manager Rafael Stone declined to address extension discussions with Durant.
"I have some connections here within the organization," Durant said, "people I've worked with around the league already, so it just felt organic and natural coming into the gym and getting to be a Houston Rocket for the first time."
Durant added that he was impressed by the Rockets' development under head coach Ime Udoka as they captured the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference last season.
The two-time NBA champion is set to play for his fifth franchise in his 19th season in the league (including the 2019-20 campaign, which he missed due to injury). Durant averaged 26.6 points per game with 6.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.2 blocks, and 0.8 steals in 62 games last season.
