New Orleans Pelicans forward Trey Murphy III will miss the rest of the season after suffering a torn labrum and partial rotator cuff tear in his right shoulder, the team announced.
Murphy suffered the injury in the first quarter of Monday's 127-81 loss against the Detroit Pistons. The 24-year-old's arm became entangled in the legs of Pistons wing Ausar Thompson after diving for a loose ball, causing a dislocation of his shoulder.
A subsequent MRI revealed the tears, the team said.
Murphy emerged as a bright spot in a bleak Pelicans season that's been decimated by injuries. The 6-foot-8 wing came into Monday's game averaging career highs of 21.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game, and he's one of just six players on the team to appear in at least 50 contests this season.
New Orleans, which has already been eliminated from playoff contention, owns the fourth-worst record in the league at 18-51. The franchise controls its own first-round pick this summer, which currently stands a 12.5% chance of becoming the No. 1 selection.
