Simmons pushed 76ers to bring back black jerseys

The Philadelphia 76ers unveiled their new "City Edition" jerseys Tuesday - to much Internet debate - but star Ben Simmons championed the idea of going back to black.

"I took it upon myself to bring back the black jersey," Simmons told ESPN's Zach Lowe, explaining how he pushed team president Chris Heck on the idea for the last few years.

Heck told Simmons in a now-deleted tweet that he would let the point forward help design the jerseys if he won Rookie of the Year, which Simmons did in 2017-18.

The black jerseys are a hat-tip to the Allen Iverson era - the last time the 76ers reached the NBA Finals in 2001. Iverson narrated the team's uniform release video.

The skyline of houses on the new jersey represents Philadelphia's Boathouse Row, along the Schuylkill River. Looking closely at the design also reveals another Philly cornerstone.
