The Golden State Warriors will continue to play games at Chase Center despite pleas from San Francisco city officials to cancel them in light of the coronavirus outbreak, according to Joe Eskenazi of Mission Local.
On Friday, the San Francisco municipal government released a set of "aggressive recommendations" to help slow the spread of the virus, including canceling sporting events. The Warriors, however, were dismissive when presented with the suggestions, sources told Eskenazi.
"I have personally spoken to the head of the Warriors organization, Rick Welts," San Francisco Board of Supervisors member Aaron Peskin said. "I have expressed my desire that they do this voluntarily before, in the days ahead, we do it as an emergency public health order.
"It's not a matter of 'if.' It's a matter of 'when.' I hope they come to that conclusion before we make them come to that conclusion."
Golden State is set to host the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday. Signs have been placed at the entrance of the arena, warning attendees of the risks.
On Monday, nearby Santa Clara County responded to its first coronavirus-related death by implementing a mandatory three-week ban on all large gatherings beginning Wednesday. Among those affected by the ban are the NHL's San Jose Sharks, who are considering playing their home games in an empty arena.
Santa Clara County has confirmed 43 cases of the coronavirus.
