Brooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving has re-aggravated the shoulder injury that sidelined him for nearly two months earlier this season and will see a specialist this week, head coach Kenny Atkinson said Tuesday, according to ESPN's Malika Andrews.

Atkinson said the issue has continuously bothered Irving since he returned from a 26-game absence in January. The 27-year-old star guard has been ruled out for Thursday's contest against the Philadelphia 76ers, notes Andrews, but the coach declined to address concerns that Irving could miss the rest of the season.

Irving suggested in January he wasn't ruling out potential surgery on his right shoulder.

"It's very unique because it's the first time I've ever had such a significant feeling in my shoulder where I'm going up to shoot jump shots and I can't really lift my shoulder to get up in that jump-shot position," he told reporters on Jan. 4, a week before his eventual return.

"Now I'm just doing the best I can to live off of this cortisone and move forward if I need surgery in the future."

Despite being limited to just 20 games in 2019-20, Irving is averaging 27.4 points on 39.4% 3-point shooting while adding 6.4 assists and 5.2 rebounds during his first campaign in Brooklyn.
