Michael Jordan pledges $1M to Hurricane Dorian relief

Hall of Famer and Charlotte Hornets majority owner Michael Jordan has pledged $1 million toward the relief efforts in the Bahamas in the wake of Hurricane Dorian, the team announced Tuesday.

"I am devastated to see the destruction that Hurricane Dorian has brought to the Bahamas, where I own property and visit frequently. My heart goes out to everyone who is suffering and to those who have lost loved ones," Jordan said in a statement. "As the recovery and relief efforts continue, I will be tracking the situation closely and working to identify non-profit agencies where the funds will have the most impact. The Bahamian people are strong and resilient and I hope that my donation will be of help as they work to recover from this catastrophic storm."

Jordan's pledge follows respective $100,000 donations by both of the NBA's active Bahamian players, Buddy Hield of the Sacramento Kings and Deandre Ayton of the Phoenix Suns.

The Category 5 storm has resulted in hundreds of missing people and extensive damage to the Caribbean archipelago, particularly the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama. The official death toll stands at 50, Bahamian health minister Dr. Duane Sands told ABC News on Sunday.
