The Chicago Bulls are trading point guard Jameer Nelson to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for center Willie Reed, sources told Yahoo's Shams Charania.

Reed will then be waived by the Bulls, according to NBC Sports Chicago's Vincent Goodwill. The Bulls also reportedly have the right to swap second-round picks in 2022.

The Pistons were in desperate need of backcourt depth after losing Reggie Jackson to an ankle injury and Avery Bradley to the Clippers in the Blake Griffin trade. Nelson will reunite with Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy, who coached him for five seasons with the Orlando Magic.

Nelson had spent the season with the New Orleans Pelicans before going to Chicago in last week's Nikola Mirotic trade. In 43 games with the Pelicans, he averaged 5.1 points and 3.6 assists while shooting 36.4 percent from 3-point range. He did not play a game for the Bulls.

Reed, who was traded to the Pistons in the Griffin deal, is serving a league-issued six-game suspension for a domestic violence incident dating back to August. The NBA Players Association is appealing the length of the suspension on his behalf.
