The San Francisco Giants have officially shut down Joe Panik.
The second baseman was placed on the 60-day disabled list Wednesday, officially ending his season due to a lower back injury.
Panik, a first-time All-Star, was sidelined for most of August with the injury, and appeared in only three games in September before experiencing renewed discomfort in his back.
The 24-year-old's first full season in the majors can be considered a huge success, as evidenced by his .312/.378/.455 slash line.
