The Athletics hired former Milwaukee Brewers executive Cam Castro to be their new general manager.

Castro was the senior vice president of player development and performance for the World Series champions.

"The A's are a historic franchise with an incredible legacy," Castro said Wednesday in a statement. "I look forward to being a part of the next chapter of A’s baseball and developing a team, culture, and organization that our fans will be proud of.”

Castro, 36, will work under president of baseball operations Taylor Smith, whom the A's hired in October.

"(Castro) has experiences and skill sets that will complement me and the very talented people that we already have in the organization," Smith said. "He's one of the best development minds in the game with a proven track record of building the systems and processes that develop a winner."

Castro had worked in the Brewers organization since 2019.

Brewers assistant GM Matt Kleine was also offered the Houston Astros' GM job but turned it down, a source told Adam McCalvy of MLB.com.

The Athletics missed the playoffs for a sixth straight year after finishing 64-98.
