Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy apologized for taking a shot at the New York Yankees in an exchange with slugger Jake Bauers during their World Series celebration.

After the Brewers clinched their first-ever World Series title in October, Murphy told Bauers on the field to remember "this is the way we used to do it" when "you're on that horseshit Yankees team and you guys are all playing for yourselves."

Murphy said he called Yankees general manager Brian Cashman "right away" when he realized his comments were caught on camera and went viral.

"I tried to explain that I wasn't talking about the 2026 Yankees," Murphy told the New York Post's "The Show" podcast, according to ESPN. "I was just referring to the teams with a lot of money that sign a lot of players that sometimes end up not being that 'Little Engine that Could,' so to speak."

Murphy added: "I regret saying it."

Bauers, who played for the Yankees in 2023, is expected to sign a lucrative contract in free agency after hitting 26 home runs in the regular season and winning NLCS MVP.

Murphy said he treated the on-field conversation as a de facto goodbye to Bauers.

"I felt horribly if I slandered the Yankees, because I was just kind of referring to them as this iconic machine. ... It wasn't smart on my part, and I'm sorry about it," Murphy said.
