The San Diego Padres bolstered their rotation by grabbing starter Casey Mize from the Detroit Tigers in a last-second trade before Monday's deadline.
San Diego acquired Mize and minor-league infielder Gage Workman from Detroit in exchange for left-handers Kash Mayfield and Jackson Wolf, both teams announced.
Mize joins a revamped Padres rotation that also includes Robbie Ray, whom San Diego acquired from the San Francisco Giants earlier Monday.
An All-Star in 2025, Mize is enjoying a career-best season this year. Although he missed a bit of time due to a recurring adductor injury, the former first overall pick owns a 2.70 ERA, 2.58 FIP, and 0.99 WHIP along with 85 strikeouts and just 19 walks in 16 starts in 2026.
Mize will be a free agent after this season.
Mayfield is the big get on Detroit's side of the deal. The 21-year-old southpaw was San Diego's first-round pick in 2024 and ranked as the Padres' No. 2 prospect by MLB.com prior to the trade. In 15 starts at High-A Fort Wayne this year, he owns a 3.54 ERA and 1.16 WHIP along with 62 strikeouts.
Wolf, 27, has one game of big-league experience from 2023. He's spent this season in Triple-A El Paso, where he's posted a 7.05 ERA and 1.67 WHIP along with 90 strikeouts over 24 appearances (17 starts).
Workman, the other piece heading to San Diego, has appeared in 28 big-league games over the last two seasons, including 16 with Detroit this year. The 26-year-old is hitting .305/.366/.502 with 11 homers, 51 RBIs, and 20 steals in 82 games with Triple-A Toledo this year. The left-handed hitter has experience at third base, second, shortstop, and all three outfield spots.
